Does a contract for services need to exist in order to file a mechanic lien?

Illinois

A contractor worked on my house and did not provide a bid or contract for services. I paid him all amounts on demand. He left the project in October and I texted him re payment due to which he never responded. A number of the items he did needed to be redone. He reached out yesterday and I am wondering what rights he has to requesting payment.

A claim for lien can be based on an oral contract or implied contract.  A written contract is preferable.
