Most Illinois construction businesses won't need a written contract in order to file a valid and enforceable mechanics lien - and a verbal contract may be sufficient. As set out in the following article, Indiana will require that a written contract be in place in order to file a lien for certain public projects - but for privately-owned projects, there doesn't appear to be any written contract requirement: Can You File a Lien Without a Written Contract?
