Do I need carpentry license to get General building license or can I be a journeyman and then get license?

CaliforniaLicenses

Hi. I wanted to know how the process would work from start to finish from apprentice to licensed general contractor. Online it says that if I complete my apprenticeship for carpentry It would count towards years of experience (up to 3 years) for my general contractor license. But for the general contractor license I would need a carpentry license correct? And for that it says I also need four years experience as a journeyman. Does that mean I would have to do 8 years before I can be a licensed carpenter? And then another 4 years before I can do general contractor license? Or is it possible for me to do my apprenticeship, work a year as a journeyman and then apply with those 4 years for the general contractor license? Thank you in advance.
