I own a custom closet company about to open in Nashville. None of our competitors have a contractor license, do we need a contractor license? All we do is install shelving hanging and drawers and closets that are already built.

Generally speaking, the TN Board for Licensing Contractors require a licensed for prime contractors (i.e. those that contract directly with the property owner) if the total cost of the contract is $25,000 to more. As for subcontractors, they are only required to be licensed if the work being performed is electrical, mechanical, plumbing, or roofing work in excess of $25,000; and masonry work for over $100,000. From the information you provided it doesn't appear the you need to be licensed.
