Do I have to be licensed to give an estimation on what it cost to do a roof

Michigan

I have done work for this gentleman before on houses that he's bought and renovated and rent it out now he's asking me to give him an estimation on the roof and I work with the gentleman that does have a license and has general liability insurance for himself so I gave the other guy just an estimated price on doing the roof is that illegal for me to do that. So my question is do I have to be licensed or anything in Michigan to give us someone an estimation on what it would cost to do a roof

Michigan residential contractors licensing require a license to do the work AND a license to sell or quote on the work. There is actually a subsidiary license just to sell. So yes arguably providing a quotation should require a license. Now a non-binding estimate of what it would cost may not require a license.

The Michigan Occupational Code regarding residential builders says: "Notwithstanding article 6, a person may engage in the business of or act in the capacity of a residential builder or a residential maintenance and alteration contractor or salesperson in this state without a license under this article, if the person is 1 of the following: ..... (e) A person other than the salesperson that engages solely in the business of performing work and services under contract with a residential builder ... that is licensed under this article. So if you are working under a licensed bldr that's ok, but that guy has to monitor the job, handle the inspections, etc. It would be a violation of the Coded for your licensed guy to- "Aiding or abetting an unlicensed person to evade this article, or knowingly combining or conspiring with, or acting as agent, partner, or associate for an unlicensed person, allowing one's license to be used by an unlicensed person, or acting as or being an ostensible licensed residential builder or licensed residential maintenance and alteration contractor for an undisclosed person who does or shall control or direct, or who may have the right to control or direct, directly or indirectly, the operations of a licensee." (MCL 339.2411) So you should get a license! The above response is provided as a courtesy and does not establish an attorney-client relationship.
