Do business owner's have to carry a Contractors License, or just the employees?

Florida

I am looking to purchase a Florida glass/mirror company as a "passive owner" (i.e. the business is already operational, with staff, assets, loyal customers). The current owner is retiring and looking for a buyer. However, I do not have a Contractor license that is required for glass/mirror contractors in Florida. Does this forbid me from owning the company? Or do I just need to ensure that my employees (the ones actually doing the glass/mirror work) have it? By definition, the license I require is as follows: "A Florida Specialty Structure Contractor is a contractor whose services are limited to the execution of contracts requiring the experience, knowledge, and skill necessary for the fabrication, assembling, handling, erection, installation, replacement, dismantling, adjustment, alteration, repair, servicing and design work...." Thank you

I assume you mean a glass/mirror company that does installations, since merely selling mirrors does not require a contractor's license. If so, you just need a "qualifier" for your company - i.e., someone who has the required license who is either a W-2 employee of the company or owns 20% of the company and who is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the installation operation. You should check the Florida DBPR's website for more information and links to the application forms.
