can my contractor put a lien on my florida property without a signed contract?

I hired my contractor to redo my kitchen, he brought his sub par contractors in who did a shotty job and I had to hire my electrican to fix their mistakes. I have paid out of pocket 8,500 and balance of 1500 is due and I don't feel like the work warrnets the balance since I had to bring in my contractors. The question is.... Without a signed contract can he put a lien on my property? Colleen Murphy
