Can I put a Lien on a Contractor that doesn't want to pay m?

Minnesota

I'm a subcontractor that was hired by another company to perform the construction cleaning for a new memory care development, they didn't want it to pay me so I didn't finish the job, but completed about 80% of the project. He is playing around with me and owes me about 20k, can I put a lien on this case?? I don't have a signed contract, only have a work order.

I would suggest a law suit versus a lien. I am willing to discuss with with the potential client. He likely would have had to do a pre-lien and would have had to file the lien within 120 days of last efforts and lien foreclosure lawsuits are expensive.

Mechanics’ liens are recorded against the property you worked on, not the contractor that hired you. Before you can record a mechanics’ lien against the property, you have to serve a proper pre-lien notice on the property owner as well as a couple other things. If you did not serve the pre-lien notice, you do not have lien rights.
