It is difficult to provide specific helpful information without knowing at least the location of the project. However, generally speaking, a contractor who provides labor or material to a construction project to improve property is entitled to mechanics lien protection to secure amounts due for that work. Usually, a GC or other party who contracts directly with the property owner is not required to provide a preliminary (or other) notice prior to filing a lien claim - although that is not universal. No matter where the project was located, however, there are timing requirements that must be met. If the lien is filed late, it is generally fatal to the lien claim. You can find more information about mechanics liens generally, and search for state-specific information here.
