Can I file a mechanics lien without a signed contract in Florida?

FloridaMechanics Lien

We were hired as a plumbing contractor directly by the homeowner, but as a sub on the city permit under their Contractor. We don't have a signed contract or downpayment but started work and had a confrontation with the GC who now refuses to work with us and we didn't get to finish the job. We feel we are owned more than we are originally quoted for the work we did perform but the homeowner disagrees and is offering us a lot less. Can we file a lien on their property for work done to date?

Florida's Construction Lien Law defines "contract" as "an agreement for improving real property, written or unwritten, express or implied, and includes extras or change orders." Generally, you are permitted to file a lien for any unpaid work in place on the property.

How do we prove the value of what we are asking for? If there’s no proof needed on a contractors part then why couldn’t contractors just go around placing liens on people properties?
