Can a sub-contractor put a lien on primary owner-occupied home if the general contractor (who hired the sub) owes him?

TennesseeMechanics Lien

Hello, I hired and paid my general contractor for the service on my primary home. The general contractor hired a sub-contractor to perform the job but did not pay the sub. Now the sub is threatening to sue the general contract AND put a lien on my home (primary owner-occupied residence). Under the described circumstances, can the sub put a lien on my home? Thank you!

Hi! Under this limited fact-scenario, no. In Tennessee, a subcontractor has no lien rights on a residential, owner-occupied property unless that "subcontractor" has a contract directly with the owner of the property.
