Are prevailing wages required for the testing and maintenance of fire sprinkler systems

MassachusettsPrevailing Wages

If I send an employee to a public building, school or town hall, to test and possibly repair a fire sprinkler system am I required to pay prevailing wages to that employee if the amount is less than $2,000.00

Generally, all employees who do work on a public works project must be paid prevailing wages in Massachusetts. And, those in charge of the job - i.e. the public agency or GC - will generally have a prevailing wage schedule for the job which dictates what rates should be paid. Admittedly, though, I'm not an expert on the ins and outs of Massachusetts' prevailing wage requirements, so it's possible that there could be some minor work exception that applies. For more information on Massachusetts prevailing wage requirements, these resources should be really valuable: (1) Prevailing wage: for contractors; and (2) Prevailing wage: for workers. Additionally, reaching out to a Massachusetts prevailing wage consultant, like Fringe Consulting, might be helpful, too.

The request for proposal should say whether if is a prevailing wage job.  You can also call the Department of Labor and ask.  It should also be posted at the job site.
