Am I able to file a mechanics lien and what if the intent to lien doesnt work?

VirginiaRight to Lien

I was hired informally and in person by the residential home owner while filling in for the original painter that was out of town whom i have helped out in the past. The homeowner hired me on the spot stating that she felt his services were no longer needed and agreed on a payment under $1000 for the completion of that job while future services would be needed within a week or two of finishing and we would agree on another fee at that time but she was selling the house and needed repairs with some minor construction. I am not insured because i am not with a company but more like a handyman and my jobs are usually under $500 and occur maybe once a month through word of mouth. Upon completion of first job, the homeowner discontinued all correspondence with me and has relayed a message through another laborer, that I recommended she use for flooring, of her intent of nonpayment. Do i have rights?
