After filing a lien against a property, are we legally required to file a release with the county?

CaliforniaLien Releases

Hello, we're a subcontractor that filed a lien on a property after the contractor refused to pay the remainder of the subcontract. They have recently made payment after pressure from the owner and want us to release the lien. Would an "Unconditional Waiver and Release Upon Final Payment" suffice? Or do we legally have to record the release with the county?

Once you have recorded a lien, you need to record a Release of Mechanic's Lien in the Official Records of the County you recorded the lien in. An Unconditional Waiver and Release upon Final Payment is not a substitute for the recording of a Release of Mechanic's Lien.
