The best way to determine if there's a lien against a given property is to look into the property record. Stopping in at the county recorder's office and going through the property record yourself would help to see if there are any really recent documents filed - like a mechanics lien. If the recorder's office our county assessor's office has an online platform for searching the record, that'd make it easy to access records remotely. Though, there could be some lag between things being recorded and being available online. Further, there are third-party companies who provide the ability to search property records, which you should be able to find with a simple google search. Of course, there will often be even more lag there - and, it might not always be economical to perform a search. Finally, if it's your property or a property you're considering purchasing, it might make sense to hire a title company to help determine whether the property has been liened.
